“The Grizzlies” Movie Review
The strength of the human spirit is connected to our emotions, creativity, intellect, fears, and passion. Having a weak human spirit is considered to be the leading cause of high rates of drug abuse, suicide, and addiction especially among teenagers. However, sports can be used to improve the strength of the human spirit by creating unity and a sense of purpose among the youths.

The opening scene showed what appears at first
to be a boy taking a walk through with a dog. However, it quickly turns into a
tragic incident as the boy later sends the dog away only to shoot himself with
a gun. Surprisingly, we come to learn that the area has the highest teen
suicide rate in North America, and widespread domestic abuse and alcoholism.
Similarly, the scenes presented in “alterNatives” by Drew also show
that despite the cultural deference, neither attitude nor
"sincerity" is enough to address the human issues affecting the human
spirit
(Taylor, 2007 pg. 15).
The second scene is during the first day of
school where Russ Sheepherder introduced himself to the students. He tries to
ingratiate himself with the class by telling them to call him Russ "because
Mr. Sheppard is his father’s name. However, the students responded
that the reason they refer to him as Mr. Sheppard is because the term
"Mr." belong to the whites. It brings the issue of tribe and race
just like in “alterNatives”
by drew Hayden Taylor when Dale Ask Angel about her tribe before the dinner
(Taylor, 2007pg26). Both scenes show the diversity presented by tribe or
nationality differences.
The scene last scene is presented after the
first class ends with many absentees, miscommunications due to cultural
misunderstandings, and a fistfight with a combative student named Zach. The
teacher, Russ made efforts to complain to Janace who was the principal at the
school but she’s reticent to interfere. She was aware that faced by the
students in their studies are a result of their culture putting family first.
The natives consider education unnecessary in their lives. Taylor also
portrayed the issue of cultural believes by the native when Angel explains
about the alternative warriors. They are the new breeds of warriors who follow
the truth instead of the traditional ways of doing things (Taylor, 2007 Pg 57).
