CW1 Optimising Decisions using Business Analytics
1. Introduction Part
An important aspect of operations research and logistics is
finding optimal solutions to transportation and assignment problems. The papers
will present a report that entailed applying Linear Programming to address a
case study related to providing consult for Chrissie Bloggs, the CEO of
Bloggs-XYZ-Logistics Ltd. regarding the request they put forward in Case Study
I. based on the information provided by the case study, Chrissie Bloggs is the
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bloggs-XYZ-Logistics Ltd, a Small Medium Enterprise
(SME) based in the UK. Due to emerging opportunities, the company can extend
their service offerings to fulfill increasing customer demand. Chrissie
announced a new Muffler’s installation service. Customers seeking the service
arrive at the shop on the average of 4 per hour, following a Poisson
distribution. They are served on a first-in, first-out basis and come from a
very large (almost infinite) population of possible buyers. Moreover, Bloggs-XYZ-Logistics
Ltd operates two garage bays, manned from a pool of three potential servers.
The average rate of installing new mufflers by the servers is shown in Table 1.
Two of the three potential servers will be commissioned for the service.
As a result, the report will address Part 1 of the Case
Study by formulating the problem as a linear programming problem. The analysis
will consider the underlying assumptions and the formulated LP model and solve
the LP problem formulated using Microsoft Excel Solver. It will also cover the
Microsoft Excel Solver steps adopted, and the solution obtained before addressing
Parts 2 and 3 of the Case Study. The analysis will include developing a FlexSim
simulation model for the Bloggs-XYZ-Logistics Ltd queue system in Case Study I.
it will also consider the underlying assumptions, the process flow chart for
the simulation, and key aspects of the simulation model developed, it will
finalize by running the simulation model developed in Item 2a, presenting, analyzing,
and discussing the results regarding Parts 2 and 3 of Case Study I.it will
finalize by addressing Part 4 of the Case Study by critically discussing the
challenges small and medium enterprises (SMEs) such as Bloggs-XYZ-Logistics Ltd
would encounter in adopting advanced Business Analytics.
