The concept of
authentic greatness is associated with the ability to archive something
considered superior to others in society. It entails the manipulation of the
normal human capabilities to archive something that members of society can
consider great, superior, or memorable. Greatness can be archive in time of
power, size of mind. The concept of authentic greatness is widely used in
humanities, which entails the study of languages, literature, philosophy, arts,
and history. Therefore, the paper will discuss my views of the aesthetic
greatness of the humanities.
I have always
found art, history, literature, and architecture to be the most interesting
studies during my studies. There is authentic greatness in art and history
because of their role in our daily lives. Both art and history serve to remind
society about the past. History normally studies the past events that lead to
the formation of the current world. For instance, history entails the study of
the development of Ancient Egypt, which led to the formation of the current
country of Egypt. Similarly, the Assyrian Empire also archived greatness in the
development of the civilization of Mesopotamia before ending in 605 BC
(Nightingale, p2). Some of the major achievements made by the ancient
civilizations include the invention of advanced farming methods, building
cities, animal domestication, and invented forms of writing. Pyramids are some
of the structures built by the ancient Egyptian civilization that are
considered great even today.
Literature also
contributes to the definition of authentic greatness studied in humanities,
given its role in our daily lives and activities. It entails the study of
written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic
merit. Ancient literature is the study of written forms of writing recorded on
various media, including clay tablets, stones, palm leaves, stone tablets, metals, and papyri. Clay
tablets are an interesting form of writing developed by the ancient
civilizations to pass different messages such as tales, stories, plays, songs,
and poetry. They were also used to store religious, historical, and scientific
records. For instance, King Ashurbanipal, who ruled during the era of the
Assyrian Empire, had a library that contained over 30,000 clay tablets.
Recently, an Assyrian clay tablet was discovered, and it was dated 4,000 years
old in Turkey (Turp et al., p4).
It contained a message translated into a marriage contract that stated that the
wife was to allow the husband to hire an enslaved woman to act as a surrogate
if the couple did not conceive within two years of the contract. It also
translated to what we believe may be the first known infertility diagnosis.
Similarly, art
studied in humanities also contributes to my definition of authentic greatness
because of its role in society. I find it fascinating how some art from the
past is still viewed and preserved the modern society. For example, the art
displayed in the Kings Palace, built around 645BC, is now displayed at the
British Museum in London. It is amazing to view such old artworks today and
their role in our lives. People are still very much inspired by the art from
the past. Renaissance-era marks the origin of some of the arts that the society
considers great to the point that it has inspired the arts presented by artists
today. The Renaissance era began in Europe during the 15th century after the
gothic. The arts displayed representational forms marking the rebirth of
naturalism, the creation of non-religious themes, and privately owned arts (Warwick, p5). For instance, some
of the paintings portrayed in churches are extremely similar to the art
presented during the Renaissance area. The Renaissance era had some of the most
beautiful art known to man. It is as if describing it with words would not meet
the reality of the art.

architecture can also be considered great because of its role in the current
world. The Colosseum is among the historical greatness archived by ancient
architecture. It falls under the definition of authentic greatness because it
is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built in history that is still
standing today. The construction of the Colosseum ended in 8Bc after it had
started around 72BC. Although it is no longer in perfect or great condition, it
is impressive to have learned that the Colosseum survived through earthquakes
and bombings during WWII (Lancaster,p14).The
Colosseum is one of the main symbols of Rome and is currently one of the
greatest tourist attractions in the world. It became one of the Seven Wonders
of the Modern World in 2007. Astonishingly, such a huge and old building is
still very much present and open to the public.
In conclusion, I have always found art, history, literature, and architecture the most interesting studies. There is authentic greatness in art and history because of their role in our daily lives. Both art and history serve to remind society about the past. History normally studies the past events that lead to the formation of the current world. It is also surprising to see how far language and writing have come in literature studies. Besides, the Colosseum is among the historical greatness archived by ancient architecture. It falls under the definition of authentic greatness because it is the largest ancient amphitheater ever constructed in history that is still standing today.
